Extra Credit Assignment

Due by 9:00pm on Tuesday, July 26

One of the learning objectives for this course is for students to relate current foreign policy issues and

problems to key concepts and theories from the course.

In helping to meet this objective, students have

the opportunity to earn up to 20 extra credit points.

To earn these points, students are to write a short 1-2 page paper where they choose a current event

(or events) in American foreign policy and show how this event demonstrates or illustrates AT LEAST

TWO core concepts from the course.

To begin, choose a recent new article that relates to American foreign policy (not an op-ed or opinion

piece).

This news article must be from a reputable, national news source (such as the New York Times,

BBC, or CNN).

This article should not be one that you posted or responded to on the discussion boards.

Next, you will write a paper that discusses how this story and the event it discusses illustrates or

demonstrates concepts from the course.

Examples of American foreign policy concepts that you might

discuss include (but are not limited to): the four Ps (power, prosperity, principles, peace) and their

relation to one another and US policy and/or tradeoffs between these interests; deterrence; models of

decision making; groupthink; arms races; nuclear nonproliferation/arms control;

multilateralism/unilateralism; protectionism/free trade.

If you cannot apply AT LEAST TWO course concepts to your article/event, then you will need to choose a

second article to use to apply your second course concept.

To receive full credit, your paper should have the following components:

1.

You should provide a brief synopsis of the article and the issue that it discusses.

2.

You should apply AT LEAST 2 course concepts to this article/event.

a.

You should give a short definition of the course concept.

b.

You should provide a detailed discussion of how each concept applies to the event in

the article (perhaps the article/event shows an example of the concept or perhaps the

concept helps in explaining or understanding the event, etc.).

3.

You should have a solid conclusion to your paper.

4.

You must provide links to the specific article(s) that you are discussing.

This extra credit assignment is due at 9:00pm on Tuesday, July 26.

Late assignments will NOT be

accepted.
