Abstract:

Plants diversity of the Sonoran desert was studied at the Mountain View park using

observational methods. Two runs were conducted, one in the slope and one in the wash of the

selected area. For each run, there were three trials and for each trial, participant covered 20*2 m

area and recorded the plants found in this area. It is concluded that the slope had less plant

diversity than the wash, yet higher number of plants, mostly heat-tolerant bursgae.

Introduction:

In biology, an ecosystem is the sum of organisms living in one habitat and the abiotic elements

that they interact with (Recee et al. , 2014, p.1233). Ecology is the branch of science that studies

the relations of organisms to one another and to their surrounding environment (“Ecology,”

2016). Within the ecological hierarchy, biological communities fall in the second level from the

bottom up following the individual level. Within that level, the scientific quest of ecology is to

examine the organisms as groups of individuals belonging to one species and living in the same

habitat, or physical region (“Wanderi”).

One example of a habitat could be a desert biome. A desert biome is a type of natural

habitat forms due to low levels of rainfalls (“Desert Biome Facts”). For the purpose of our study,

we conducted an experiment in the Sonoran desert.

The Sonoran desert is very large that it covers 100,000 square miles in southwestern

Arizona and southeastern California in the United States and most of Baja California and the

western part of the state of Sonora in Mexico. The hot dry climate of that habitat in addition to its

low rainfall levels, gives rise to many unique characteristics of the Sonoran desert (“Sonoran

Desert”). The most notable character of this desert is having a mild winter. Animals and plants
