. Chapter four covers decoding
human behavior and personality as Chapter five covers the individual and
organization motivations. Both the chapter are different at first. However, the
chapters complement each other in practice. In chapter four decoding human
behavior and personality the textbook covers the “Big 5 Model”, Myers-Briggs Type
Indicator and approaches to difficult personalities.
The “Big 5 Model” also known as the five-factor model uses the acronym
“OCEAN” to compare personalities. The “O” stands for openness to experience. This
type of individual that are actively seeking out new and varied experiences and the
extent to which they are aware of their thoughts, feelings, and impulse (Kolb, D
2007). The “C’ stands for conscientiousness, and this classification of individuals
tend to be dependable, trustworthy and conform to social norms (Kolb, D 2007).
Conscientiousness individuals generally set higher goals for themselves and have a
higher expectation for others. Resulting in greater motivation, higher occupational
status and more satisfied with their job (Kolb, D 2007). “E” stands for extroversion
and these individuals are outgoing, sociable or assertive (Kolb, D 2007). These
people tend to be very active, energetic and have many interests and hobbies. “A”
stands for agreeableness, and this captures the extent of which people are likable,
cooperative and considerate (Kolb, D 2007).”N” stands for neuroticism which is also
called emotional stability (Kolb, D 2007). These individuals have a tendency to
experience chronic negative emotions (Kolb, D 2007). For example, worry,
insecurity, self-pity, poor self-image and mood swing (Kolb, D 2007).
Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) is a personality profile partially based
on Carl Jung’s theory (Kolb, D 2007). MBTI states there are four essential
components to personality. First is extroversion/introversion which refers to how
the individual socially interacts with others (Kolb, D 2007). Extroversions are known
to be outgoing and sociable whereas, introversions are shy and prefer to be alone.
Second is sensing/intuiting referring to how people prefer to collect information.
Third is thinking/feeling referring to evaluate the information in a whole. Thinking
individuals prefer to rely on logic and analysis whereas feeling individuals go more
on their own or other reactions (Kolb, D 2007).
Finally, is judging/perceiving dimension which is how people like to make
decisions. Judging individuals are planners and like to make calls whereas, the
perceiving individual is more flexible, spontaneous and adaptive in the decision style
(Kolb, D 2007). Finally, in chapter four discussed how to deal with difficult people.
73 percent of managers stated they have a hard time building relations with people
they dislike (Kolb, D 2007). Nigel Nicholson recommends that managers take four
steps to dealing with difficult people. Step one, create a rich picture of the problem
person. Think of what motivates the person, what obstacle are preventing them from
performing, what happens if the barriers were removed and had this occurred
before. By asking these questions, you will start to get a better understanding what
