If we agree that virtuous people conduct themselves in a moral and ethical manner, I would agree with the majority of the group that Arpaio is not virtuous. Arpaio has been investigated by the FBI, the Department of Justice, a Federal Grand Jury, and has been subject to several court orders stemming from an ACLU lawsuit to stop abuse in the Maricopa County Detention Center (Bijns, 2011). There is little doubt that Sheriff Arpaio is implementing policies that he feels will assist in crime control and prevention for Maricopa County. The questions that must be answered are what are the motives for Arpaio's actions? Are they in the best interest of the community or are they self-promoting and are these actions virtuous in nature? Being a virtuous person does not preclude one from being tough on crime. Aristotle lists justice as a virtue and while justice may be defined in many ways, it is certainly applicable in this discussion (Banks, 2013). The dilemma in this situation appears not to be the motives of Sheriff Arpaio but rather the manner in which he presents himself as doing what is right and just and most importantly, in the best interest of the community for which he serves. In this respect Sheriff Arpaio may view himself as virtuous and believe he is doing what is right and just. After all, Arpaio has implemented some noteworthy and effective policies. His program called "Hard Knocks High" is the only accredited high school in an American jail (MCSO, 2012). He additionally, started ALPHA, a substance abuse program that has shown great promise by reducing recidivism. Other programs which Arpaio implemented involve community watch and volunteer programs and volunteer inmate organ donor programs (Bijns, 2011). But many of these good and productive programs have been overshadowed by others that may be seen as insensitive and inhumane and by controversy surrounding abuse of power and misuse of funds. How then do we decide if he is virtuous or not?Is it possible, Sheriff Arapio is a virtuous man by his standards or even by his constituents standards? The reason why I ask, is there is a reason why Arapio is being re-elected time and time again. Is it possible for Arapio to be a virtuous man at home and lack virtues while he is at the office in order to fight crime and make tough legislation's surrounding crime? When you consider the types of crimes sheriff Arpaio has been charged with, what kinds of vices come to mind? How do you think these vices impact his potential to have a virtuous character? (at least 3 pages and cite thank you)
